Other Therapeutic Approaches

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a method for assisting you to access the particular neural net which contains a memory.  Brainspotting is a method which allows you to heal trauma without being retraumatized!

Frequently, this technique is done while you are wearing headphones which are playing at a barely audible level.  The music is “biolateral” which means that it moves from one headphone to the other (from ear to ear).

The therapist invites you to connect with a specific feeling in your body.  This can be a positive feeling of groundedness or comfort (which can be very helpful if you are working with extremely traumatic memories), or a place in your body where you are experiencing distress or discomfort:  churning in the stomach, tightness in the shoulders, etc.

The therapist then helps you find an eye position in which the feeling in your body is the strongest.  From this position, you would work through the emotional content of the memory which has been encoded in the body-mind.

Research is finding that the combination of biolateral music, which soothes and harmonizes both hemispheres of the brain, and holding the eye position allows you to process material at a much deeper level, frequently allowing you to resolve issues that have been troubling you for years.  Because brainspotting works with your body’s wisdom, brainspotting takes place at the pace you feel comfortable with, as does all good therapy.

Brainspotting assists in relieving anxiety and depression, as traumatic memories are healed.

Brainspotting is related to a more commonly known treatment called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).  Both are used for addressing traumatic memories and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

David Grand is the therapist who developed brainspotting.  I have several links below to youtube presentations by him explaining the process.  Each segment is about 10 minutes long.  To return to this site, press the back arrow after viewing the video.
